LOCAL GOVERNMENT. Our primary clients using the geoportal application are the agencies and departments comprising local government. A substantial investment of time and money go into the construction of GIS datasets whose intention is helping municipal and county government staff do their jobs more efficiently and more competently. Some examples of local government agencies that currently benefit from the utilization of customized geoportal include tax assessment/property appraising, planning and zoning, public works/utilities, and emergency preparedness/E-911. Finding the owner name of a particular property, finding an address range on a particular street or the intersection of two particular streets, finding a particular building address, or finding certain utility features (i.e. manholes, hydrants, poles, etc.) are just the tip of the iceberg of the type of customized queries the geoportal application allows.

In addition to the benefits of using the geoportal application as an "in-house" GIS data distribution vehicle, the concept is also ideal for making select "public record" datasets available to the general public via the internet. Property mapping illustrating lots and/or parcels, the designations of a jurisdiction's land use or zoning plan, location of government or public facilities, historic or special taxing district boundaries, school district boundaries and school locations, voting precinct boundaries and polling locations, political boundaries such as council or commission districts, and floodplain designations represent examples of GIS datasets whose accessibility can be quite useful to a locale's citizenry. Without real-time reliance upon and aid of jurisdiction staff, the public can acquire pertinent information remotely via the geoportal interface. Additionally, jurisdictions employing the geoportal application project a progressive, pro-technology image to its citizens, business community, and neighboring jurisdictions.
